The Research Associate II will conduct research and program evaluation activities in the tobacco control and health communications field.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Aiding in the management of studies conducted internally, such as those to evaluate Legacy’s programs and media campaigns, as well as those conducted in collaboration with external partners and government collaborators
  • Helping to select and refine study measures, develop and implement surveys, oversee quality control of data collection, and prepare a summary of findings

HP&W Alcohol Prevention Initiatives Graduate Internship

  • Position: Alcohol Prevention Initiatives Graduate Internship 
  • Department/Unit: Health Promotion and Wellness (HPaW) 
  • Hours: 20 hours per week
  • Immediate Supervisor: Lisa Currie, Director of Health Promotion and Wellness 
Health Promotion and Wellness (HPaW), a unit of the Northwestern University Health Service within the Division of Student Affairs, is committed to providing an opportunity for intellectual, personal, and professional growth for its graduate interns.

The Alcohol Prevention Initiatives Graduate Intern is a paid paraprofessional position that works collaboratively with the HPaW professional staff to implement evidence-based strategies in alcohol prevention guided by a harm reduction approach. This is a 20 hour per week commitment that requires some evening and weekend hours, in accordance with the graduate intern’s availability and current departmental need. Enthusiasm and initiative-taking ability required.

Projects and Responsibilities
The primary project and responsibility for this position is to oversee the Red Watch Band bystander intervention training program. Currently, 30-35 trainings for 600+ NU students occur annually with growth anticipated. Responsibilities include:
  • presenting Red Watch Band trainings
  • managing the online registration process, including communication with registrants as needed
  • managing program logistics, including scheduling facilitators and appropriate training spaces, and the organization of training materials
  • marketing the program via various forms of campus media
  • supporting assessment and evaluation efforts
  •  contributing to ongoing curriculum revision
  • aiding in training our team of 12+ student and staff facilitators
Additionally, the graduate intern will participate in the campus Alcohol Coalition, which utilizes an environmental management approach to reduce high risk drinking and the resulting harm. The intern will gain an understanding of the broader range of alcohol prevention and intervention initiatives across campus as a result.

Additional projects may be developed, as time, current departmental priorities and intern interests/skills dictate. This may include assisting HPaW professional staff with other alcohol prevention outreach activities, contributing to website content development or grant applications, and other projects determined in collaboration with the director.

Lastly, a curriculum focused on college health promotion theory and evidence-based alcohol prevention strategies has been developed which will provide the graduate intern with readings and opportunities for reflection, including weekly to biweekly supervision meetings with the director.

Student Competition

THE ILLINOIS MOSQUITO & VECTOR CONTROL ASSOCIATION
Is Pleased to Announce the HENRY M. LAWICKI ANNUAL STUDENT/INTERN COMPETITION

The Henry M. Lawicki Student/Intern Competition is a regular part of the ANNUAL MEETING of the Illinois Mosquito and Vector Control Association (IMVCA) held in November each year. In past years, up to $500 in cash prizes have been awarded to winners.
  • Criteria: The competition is open to all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in public or private schools and to interns of Local Health Departments or Mosquito Abatement Districts. The topic can address any area of mosquito, tick or other vector biology, ecology, and relationships to disease or control. 
  • Process: On the morning of the annual meeting, entrants present a ten-minute talk about their topic and answer a few questions. Then, they are welcome to stay for the meetings and other activities including the meals giving ample opportunity to network with and learn from parties interested in mosquito and vector control.

Summary of Essential Job Duties:

Functioning under the direction of the Healthy Habits Program Administrator, implements Healthy Habits program in partner schools, including teaching curriculum for 6th and 7th grades, and facilitating the middle school afterschool program. Additional job responsibilities include teaching Healthy Habits at elementary schools, providing resources and technical assistance to partner schools, developing health education materials, and assisting with curriculum development and enhancement.

Healthy Habits provides education and technical assistance to support healthy eating and physical activity among school-aged children and their families. The overall goal of Healthy Habits is to reduce the risks and impacts of obesity in communities of need. Healthy Habits is a Community Benefit program of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Educational Requirements:
Bachelor's degree required in nutrition/public health/community health related field. Master's degree preferred. Spanish fluency a plus. Must possess computer literacy - working knowledge of Windows or comparable system, presentation development, email, browsers, spreadsheets, etc.

Current California driver's license and car.

Experience:
