Loyola Masters of Public Health Accreditation

The Loyola University of Chicago Master of Public Health Program is pleased to announce that its application to begin the accreditation process by the Council on Education for Public Health “CEPH” has been accepted. Although the current curriculum and faculty of Loyola’s Master of Public Health program adheres to the strict code of excellence instituted by Loyola University, CEPH accreditation is important for the MPH program as it will enhance the public health education experience and improve the public health training for our students and open additional job opportunities for graduates, especially in governmental positions.

 We look forward to working with CEPH in order to meet accreditation standards and strongly believe the process will be a great asset to our program, faculty and students.

Advocate Training Supporting Survivors of Sexual Assault

If you are interested in supporting survivors of sexual assault, this post is for you. We are looking for graduate students who would like to attend an Illinois state sexual assault advocate training in August 2013.

Those who attend the training must commit to volunteering for the Loyola Sexual Assault Advocacy Line during the 2013/2014 school year (and potentially the 2014/2015 school year, if you are a first year student.)

Loyola Seeks Grad Student Office Assistant

Loyola University Chicago’s Office of Sustainability is looking for a Loyola graduate student to assist in the Office’s day-to-day office responsibilities. In addition, the graduate assistant will support outreach activities related to various programs.
The Office of Sustainability is located within the soon to open Institute of Environmental Sustainability on Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus. This is a part-time position and the student will be expected to work 20 hours per week starting the mid-August 2013.
The hired candidate will work during the fall and spring semester, with potential summer employment. We are seeking someone who is hard-working, is committed to fostering environmental sustainability, has strong computer skills, and is comfortable taking the initiative once familiar with project(s). The student will receive a student stipend as well as partial tuition remission renewable for up to two years.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the planning of meetings and conferences including securing meeting space locations, ordering refreshments, and preparing agendas and meeting minutes. (Estimate 25%)
  • Assists with the design and update of communication and marketing tools including newsletters, websites, social media, blog entries and printed materials. (Estimate 35%)
  • Support, and occasionally lead, outreach activities. This may include facilitating meetings or workshops, attending and exhibiting at various campus events, promoting fellowship/scholarship programs, and promoting sustainability programs. (Estimate 20%)
  • Works closely with the Institute’s staff on administrative tasks as needed. (Estimate 20%)


Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, the individual must:

  • Have advanced MS Word processing, MS Excel or Spreadsheets, MS PowerPoint skills. Be an adept user of Internet, email, social networking systems and other office automation systems.
  • Possess strong organization and communication skills.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and be able to work in a collaborative manner with IES faculty and staff.

Quality Improvement Facilitator Internship

Position Summary:
The purpose of this 12 month internship is to coordinate and implement quality improvement initiatives with Community Care Transitions Programs. This may involve researching data, developing project plans, monitoring quality improvement activities, individual case or record review, serving as a resource and providing education to team members, providers, practitioners.

Essential Functions:
Facilitates health care activities, project participation or review and implementation with physicians, providers and team members, ensuring plans, tasks and timelines meet the Company and contracting agency requirements.

Develops and maintains activity and/or project plans. Ensures plans, tasks, and timelines meet contractual and Company requirements and guidelines. Provides regular updates to Company management on activity and/or project status.

Researches and gathers technical and clinical data to support activities and/or project initiatives. Performs analysis on the results of the data collection. Based on the outcome of the analysis, determines areas for improvement. Provides recommendations feedback to project participants. Assists in the development of project materials and intervention tools.

Provides education on improvement methods and processes to providers and practitioners. Assists in the implementation of the methods and processes.
Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Requirements:
Currently enrolled in a Master's degree in Public Health and valid RN, LPN, RHIA or RHIT and/or 3 – 5 years experience in Wellness, preventive health, health care quality improvement and/or medical; experience in specific areas as needed/designated by the contract or project; functional PC knowledge; significant experience in focus area of project(s).

Positions working on specific contracts may require U.S. Citizenship.
Because of the nature and immediacy of the work, the ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance is essential.

Additional Comments:
60% local or overnight travel.
Experience with quality improvement initiatives preferred.
Experience with community care transitions preferred.
Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred.

Loyola 12-month assistantship

The Office of Research Services (ORS) is offering a 12-month assistantship to students enrolled in a graduate program. The graduate assistant will work directly with the Assistant Director for Research Compliance, the Chairperson of the IRB, and another graduate assistant at Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus supporting the compliance committees that review research protocols involving human subjects, animals, radioactive isotopes, and chemical/biological agents. The job requires a high degree of organization, critical thinking, and attention to detail. Ideal candidates will have experience in human subject research and/or knowledge of research ethics. The award is renewable annually based on performance.

Job Description: The primary tasks are to assist the Assistant Director for Research Compliance in the daily administrative tasks associated with the Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects (IRB), and other duties as assigned. The position requires a commitment of 20 hours a week.

Epidemiologist: American Cancer Society

Great Opportunity for Master of Public Health Epidemiology major

Description:
Analyst will work closely with doctoral and other senior level epidemiologists to design, conduct and publish original epidemiologic research on the causes, prevention and control of cancer. The analyst will also contribute to the team of research analysts who share in program review, analysis documentation, derived variable creation, and support for external collaborations. In addition, the analyst will help advance the group's collective expertise in statistical programming and epidemiologic methods through independent study, internal presentations and written memos. The analyt may also contribute to collection and management of data and biospecimens for the Programs prospective studies. Design and conduct epidemiologic studies using large American Cancer Society datasets (Cancer Prevention Study I, Cancer Prevention Study II, the Cancer Prevention Study II Nutrition Survey, and Cancer Prevention Study-3) and public datasets using various computer resources and statistical software.
  • Provide statistical programming support and database analysis for collaborative epidemiologic studies with outside researchers, as needed.
  • Document analytic programs and data management to facilitate record-keeping and use by others. 
  • Conduct literature searches on selected topics.
  • Contribute to general data/biospecimen collection and management as needed 
  • Assist in responding to correspondence and preparing presentations.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in epidemiology (MPH) or related field, and at least one year programming experience in analytic work, preferably in a scientific or epidemiologic research environment.
  • Strong problem solving skills and ability to produce high quality work independently.
  • Highly motivated with strong attention to detail and organization skills. 
  • Strong computer knowledge and proficient in SAS. 
  • Strong quantitative skills. 
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and efficiently
  •  Exceptional teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate in a cross-functional environment. 
  • Experience in electronic data management, particularly in obtaining and processing electronic data.

Research Study Recruiter: Chicago

The Healthy Youths Program and the Community Outreach Intervention Projects at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a full-time Research Specialist for a federally-funded study to prevent HIV/AIDS among juvenile offenders. The study is a randomized controlled trial to evaluate an innovative and uniquely tailored HIV/AIDS, mental health, and substance use program designed for 13-17 year old males and females on probation.

Recruitment and retention responsibilities:
  • Recruit, track, and assess participating youth for enrollment and follow-up in the research study 
  • Make contact with youths’ legal guardians to explain the study, retrieve consent, and maintain an ongoing relationship with the family 
  • Conduct baseline and follow-up assessments with youth participating in the study 
  • Maintain communication with youth using various communication media (telephone, email, and texts) to schedule appointments, send reminders, and verify contact information throughout the study.
Qualifications:
Ideal candidates will have:
  • Bachelors degree required, advanced degree in a relevant area such as public health, psychology, or social work preferred

Epidemiologist: Chicago

Great Opportunity for a Master of Public Health Graduate

Assist in the oversight for the Healthy Chicago Survey, including reviewing questionnaire iterations, community area aggregation and sampling plans, technical reports and other work products from the vendor in order to ensure appropriate survey methodologies are being implemented and timelines are being met.

  • Perform substantive analysis on local and national health survey datasets (BRFSS, NHANES, Healthy Chicago) utilizing advanced SAS programming techniques, such as MACROS,PROC REPORT, POWER, SURVEYSELECT, SURVEYMEANS, SURVEYFREQ, SURVEYREG, and SURVEYLOGISTIC, in order to produce descriptive statistics with weighted frequencies and confidence intervals for demographic and geographic subgroups. 
  • Maintain and analyze datasets related to chronic disease, specifically diabetes, from multiple sources such as birth and death certificates, hospitalization discharges, emergency room visits, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, the Healthy Chicago Survey and other datasets with Chicago-specific data. 
  •  Implement epidemiologic methods for small- area estimation and other complex analyses to better understand the factors contributing to diabetes in Chicago, barriers to controlling diabetes, and the efficacy of interventions to overcome the identified barriers.
  • Prepare reports and presentations with tables, maps, charts and graphic displays of data for distribution to internal and external stakeholders regarding diabetes and other chronic diseases using SAS, ArcView, Microsoft applications, and Adobe Creative Suite.
Performs related duties as required. Location: DePaul Center Address: 333 S. State Street Shift: Monday through Friday Hours: 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Some overtime in the event that a public health emergency is identified.

Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics or a related field supplemented by three years of progressively responsible epidemiological experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience, provided the minimum degree requirement is met.
