Position Announcement: Program Director - Chicago

The Sinai Urban Health Institute (SUHI) is dedicated to improving the health of Chicago’s urban communities through data-driven research, interventions, evaluation, and community engagement. Founded in 2000 as part of the Sinai Health System, SUHI’s mission is grounded in the belief that in order to serve our neighbors well, we need to understand not just the patients who enter our doors but the entire community as well. A major component of the Institute’s work involves examining the impact of social issues, such as poverty, on health, and SUHI is known as a leader in developing and implementing interventions that address disparities across a range of health outcomes.

We are seeking a Program Director to lead all aspects of the Lawndale Diabetes Project.  This community-based intervention employs community health workers to improve health outcomes and access to care in persons with diabetes in North and South Lawndale.  Specific responsibilities include:
Overseeing the full cycle of program implementation, from designing intervention activities to creating and implementing evaluation plans
Managing grant activities, such as fundraising and reporting to funders
Supervising a diverse team, including community health workers, a research assistant, and an epidemiologist
Building and managing relationships with internal Sinai Health System stakeholders and external community-based organizations
Disseminating findings, both in academic contexts such as peer-reviewed journals as well as with community partners via town hall forums

The successful application should possess:

  • A Master’s degree in public health, sociology, social work, or closely related field and at least 4 years of relevant work experience, preferably in a public health or health care setting, OR have a Ph.D. in public health or a closely related field
  • Extensive experience in program development and management
  • Considerable experience supervising staff in the completion of multiple projects with tight budget and time constraints
  • Experience with grant management and demonstrated success in fundraising activities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to resolve conflict and provide clear direction
  • Strong verbal and written presentation and communication skills for large and diverse audiences
  • Considerable knowledge of statistical methods and of SAS, SPSS and/or other statistical software
  • Considerable skill in analyzing complex epidemiological issues and in recommending disease prevention interventions
  • Demonstrated ability to write articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Some experience working in chronic disease management is desired, but not required.

Sinai Health System is an equal opportunity employer and encourages people of color and women to apply. If interested, please apply at www.healthcaresource.com/sinai/index.cfm.   The position is #1695.  Applicants will be considered on a rolling basis and the position will be filled as soon as possible.

Kane County to Hold Health Impact Assessment Training Workshop!

October 21st training will help you advance health in your community

The use of health impact assessments (HIAs) has been gaining momentum as the connection between planning factors (i.e. land use, community design, transportation networks, food systems, etc.) and health issues (asthma, diabetes, obesity) has become increasingly evident. Every day, planners and policy makers have opportunities to make choices that affect health, but don't have the tools to effectively analyze situations.

On October 21st, Kane County is offering a free training workshop that will equip your community's planners and policy makers with the knowledge needed to utilize HIA in your community! The workshop is open to everyone who wants to attend and will be held from 9 -10:30 AM (check-in and snacks at 8:30 AM). The workshop will provide an overview of the HIA process, with a particular focus on how to get started with an HIA. Attendees are also welcome to stay and observe the Village of Carpentersville Stakeholder Engagement Meeting that will be held from 10:45 AM to noon. The Stakeholder Engagement Meeting is a preliminary step in the HIA process and will inform the Village of Carpentersville Washington / Main St. Intersection Improvement HIA.

To RSVP please contact Justin at jharbison@luc.edu

Come learn about HIA now so you will be prepared to take advantage of future HIA grant opportunities!
