The Illinois Association of Environmental Professionals announces its 2014 STUDENT RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM
The SRGP is an effort to increase student interest in the environmental
professions and to support them in conducting research and defining their
career goals. The student research grant program will review all
applications and give one First Place award of $1,000 and one Second Place
award of $500 to aid students in conducting their research project
(limited to supplies and mileage). The winners will receive their awards
and recognition at the IAEP June 2014 Meeting. Winners must be present at
the IAEP June Meeting to receive the awards. Winners will also be required
to create a poster in HTML or PDF format of their research project to be
posted on the IAEP website (both prior to project initiation and updated
after the project has been completed).
ELIGIBILITY
• Be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student ). Undergraduates must
be enrolled in at least his/her sophomore year at an accredited 4 year
undergraduate college located in Illinois.
• Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent on
a 5.0 scale).
• Have a declared major in a science, engineering or policy related
discipline. The following are examples of acceptable majors: civil,
chemical or environmental engineering, environmental science,
environmental studies, biology, hydrogeology, geology, geography, ecology,
industrial hygiene, toxicology, environmental policy. NOTE: this list is
not exhaustive.
• Be a student member of IAEP (Applicants may join at the time of packet
submission)
1. RESEARCH GRANT PROPOSAL – REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
Applicants will prepare a research grant proposal (3 pages maximum)

how long he/she has known the applicant and testifying to the applicant’s
ability and motivation to complete the proposed project.

STUDENT WORKER POSITION AT LUREC FOR SUMMER 2014
The Loyola University Retreat and Ecology Campus (LUREC), located in Bull Valley, Illinois, has summer employment opportunities for Loyola students interested in working on its farm. The farm provides food for the LUREC operations, in addition to a farm stand that will operate at the property. Students can expect to gain hands on experience with farming operations through the term of their employment.
Job responsibilities include:
- Supporting the Farm Operations Manager in preparing the gardens for harvest. This includes seeding, watering and weeding of the farm at the direction of the Farm Operations Manager.
- Supporting the operations of the greenhouse and hoop house in order to enhance production.
- Participate in the operations of the Farm Stand as directed by the Farm Operations Manager.
- Assist with programs including tours of the farm and lectures on farming with the guidance of the Farm Operations Manager and Chef.

Openings for two Analysts at Erie Family Health Center
Erie Family Health Center is a federally qualified health
center that serves the west and northwest communities of Chicago. With
locations in communities ranging from Humboldt Park to Evanston, Erie serves
over 50,000 patients, many of whom live at or below the federal poverty level.
Erie’s Quality Improvement department supports all of Erie’s sites and staff by
tracking population health and operational outcomes and facilitating projects
to improve the clinical processes that affect them.
Currently, the department is looking to hire two Analysts to
help support the work of the department and of Erie. The positions offer a
unique experience in clinical and operational administration and provide an
excellent window into primary care, community health, and the implementation of
healthcare reform at the front line. Previous Analysts have gone onto medical
school, business school, senior administrative positions at other Chicagoland
clinics, and health policy fellowships. While the exact nature of each position’s
work may vary (see below for descriptions), both require 1) excellent problem
solving skills, 2) a propensity for data and quantitative analysis, and, most
importantly, 3) a strong commitment to social justice and improving the health

Project Specialist: Choose Health Los Angeles Kids
The Project Specialist will coordinate the Choose Health LA Kids (CHLAK) project
between the project partners and preschool parents/child caregivers. This includes
coordinating and conducting parent engagement meetings, nutrition and physical activity
workshops, overseeing a parent collaborative, conducting and community assessments,
grocery store tours and food demonstrations. The Project Specialist will work under the
supervision of the project’s Initiative Coordinator and UEPI’s Executive Director.

demonstrations.
• Facilitate linkages with campus-wide College Departments (with faculty, staff and
students) through course connections, student internships, and other opportunities,
especially in conjunction with the new interdepartmental Public Health minor.
• Undertake the research and problem-solving required to address issues that may
arise with the project, including those related to the campus-wide linkages that
will be established through the position.
• Participate in project evaluation activities, such as conducting community needs
assessments, community assets mapping, stakeholder interviews and focus
groups.
• Undertake ongoing outreach and engagement of the community, local community
assistance programs and local restaurants.
