Summary:
The American Lung Association in California is
seeking an Advocacy Director to join its Los Angeles office and work in
conjunction with its statewide and local Government Relations staff.
This position will oversee the planning, development, and implementation
of the public policy initiatives in the Los Angeles area as well as
priority regional, state and federal level efforts. The ideal candidate
will be energetic, highly motivated, and detail orientated, with
excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. This is a
mostly grant-funded position.
POSITION TITLE: Advocacy Director
FTE: 1.0 (37.5 hrs/week)
SALARY: Salary commensurate with experience, plus full benefits package
The ideal candidate will also be familiar with community organizing principles and strategies such as the Midwest Academy strategy chart and will provide technical assistance and training to create a prescriptive and disciplined approach to community organizing that will succeed in promoting local and statewide policy change. This position will have a working knowledge of grants and grant management including managing budgets.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the development of the policy agenda for the greater Los Angeles region.
- Plan and execute all education, advocacy, grassroots and media advocacy strategies for public policy priority initiatives in the Los Angeles region.
- Build and maintain relationships with local and state elected officials, coalition partners, volunteers, donors and staff.
- Attend strategy sessions, coalition meetings and city council hearings where appropriate to ensure the success of policy objectives.
- Work as an integral member of the American Lung Association in California’s Government Relations department and as an integrated member of the Lung Association’s Los Angeles and Orange County offices.
- Supervise advocacy staff and projects in the Los Angeles, Orange County and Fresno areas.
- Partner with ALA staff to integrate advocacy work into all parts of the organization.
- Work closely with the Senior Director to assist coalitions and advocates throughout California with the development of comprehensive campaign and organizing strategies. Activities will include strategy sessions, trainings, materials development and other technical assistance.
- Manage tobacco control grants by performing grant deliverables, maintaining records of project contacts, tracking progress on campaigns, and helping to manage grant budgets.
- Engage in other Lung Association duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Minimum education of a B.A. or B.S. degree.
- Seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in public policy or advocacy-related work, community outreach, community organizing and public health advocacy.
- Exceptional people skills and an ability to work effectively with diverse populations (economic, cultural, and social).
- Strong verbal, analytical and written skills, including the ability to write policy and advocacy materials.
- Ability to travel frequently.
- Highly organized with excellent attention to detail, accuracy and quality.
- Ability to work on a number of fast-paced concurrent projects, prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of computer skills necessary and must be web and social media savvy.
- Represent the ALA and its mission in a professional manner at all times and takes responsibility for delivering on personal and organizational commitments.
- Highly preferred: Fluent in Spanish, knowledge of tobacco control, access to care, lung health and/or environmental issues.
