Job Description:
The public health department at HopeCore is a dynamic, fast-paced environment currently implementing a variety of health programs throughout Maara Sub-County. The team is small, and each individual is an essential member of the staff. Currently, the department has 6 full-time local staff, and 2 Global Fellows. We are hoping to find a Junior Global Fellow to continue the work of one of the present fellows when her contract is up in June 2015. This fellowship is designed to give a young professional with limited educational background and work experience the chance to contribute to, gain on-the-ground experience in, and promote health in a rural Kenya with an already-
established, locally-staffed and United States-supported 501(c)(k) non-profit organization.
The junior fellow will be trained by one of the current Global Fellows and will work under the Senior Global Fellow and Public Health Program Coordinator. The fellowship is designed to be a 1 year position and is unpaid. Housing will be provided free of charge, but all other expenses, including travel expenses, will be the responsibility of the Fellow.
Academic and Professional Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Experience working or volunteering in the field of public health, global health, medicine, or
Competencies:
- Excellent organizational and time management skills;
- Must value and demonstrate timeliness both in day-to-day work and meetings, as well as when
- reporting;
- Computer literate: proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Powerpoint;
- Social media skills: proficient in Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter;
- A quick learner, self-starter, and result-oriented;
- Good interpersonal communication skills;
- Comfortable with expressing opposing views, even when working with someone at a higher
- level;
- Reliable and with ability to inspire integrity and trust in others;
- Intellectually and emotionally mature;
- Demonstrated ability to empower, enable, and mentor others;
- Good documentation and report writing skills;
- Self- sufficient and approachable;
- Strong cross-cultural communication skills;
- Must have experience in health promotion and/or community mobilization;
- Must be an innovative and critical thinker; and
- Must be an excellent communicator, both verbal communication and written communication
- Support HopeCore’s nurse, community health workers, and health educators in day-to-day field work, including, but not limited to: school-based mobile health clinics, sexual and reproductive health services, mother-baby wellness programs, and health education and outreach projects;
- Work with the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Program Monitor to confirm quality and effective use of clean drinking water and hand washing stations installed by HopeCore at all schools in the Maara Sub-County;
- Develop strategies to better monitor and manage the WASH Program, as well as ensure hand washing soap provision and teacher education on the importance of hand sanitation throughout the Maara Sub-County;
- Manage HopeCore’s website and social media platforms;
- Research grant and other funding opportunities;Collaborate with the Program Coordinator and Senior Global Fellow on report-writing for donors and program development;
- Collaborate with the Program Coordinator and Senior Global Fellow on grant proposals from various donors and foundations;
- Collaborate with schools, churches, Ministry of Health and the community in the provision of health and medical services; and
- Any other duties as assigned by Medical Director, President/CEO, Managing Director, Program Coordinator, and/or Senior Global Fellow.
