HP&W Alcohol Prevention Initiatives Graduate Internship

  • Position: Alcohol Prevention Initiatives Graduate Internship 
  • Department/Unit: Health Promotion and Wellness (HPaW) 
  • Hours: 20 hours per week

Health Promotion and Wellness (HPaW), a unit of the Northwestern University Health Service within the Division of Student Affairs, is committed to providing an opportunity for intellectual, personal, and professional growth for its graduate interns.

The Alcohol Prevention Initiatives Graduate Intern is a paid paraprofessional position that works collaboratively with the HPaW professional staff to implement evidence-based strategies in alcohol prevention guided by a harm reduction approach. This is a 20 hour per week commitment that requires some evening and weekend hours, in accordance with the graduate intern’s availability and current departmental need. Enthusiasm and initiative-taking ability required.

Projects and Responsibilities
The primary project and responsibility for this position is to oversee the Red Watch Band bystander intervention training program. Currently, 30-35 trainings for 600+ NU students occur annually with growth anticipated. Responsibilities include:
  • presenting Red Watch Band trainings
  • managing the online registration process, including communication with registrants as needed
  • managing program logistics, including scheduling facilitators and appropriate training spaces, and the organization of training materials
  • marketing the program via various forms of campus media
  • supporting assessment and evaluation efforts
  •  contributing to ongoing curriculum revision
  • aiding in training our team of 12+ student and staff facilitators
Additionally, the graduate intern will participate in the campus Alcohol Coalition, which utilizes an environmental management approach to reduce high risk drinking and the resulting harm. The intern will gain an understanding of the broader range of alcohol prevention and intervention initiatives across campus as a result.

Additional projects may be developed, as time, current departmental priorities and intern interests/skills dictate. This may include assisting HPaW professional staff with other alcohol prevention outreach activities, contributing to website content development or grant applications, and other projects determined in collaboration with the director.

Lastly, a curriculum focused on college health promotion theory and evidence-based alcohol prevention strategies has been developed which will provide the graduate intern with readings and opportunities for reflection, including weekly to biweekly supervision meetings with the director.

Previous experience with alcohol and other drug issues, peer education or student leadership training, or with college health promotion is preferred, but not required.
